Stainless steel welded straight strainers with in-line connections

Welded Straight Strainer

The Saifilter welded straight strainer is a cleanable stainless steel pipeline strainer designed for installation in a straight pipe run. Fluid enters and exits on the same axis, while a removable cylindrical element captures solid particles before they reach downstream equipment.

Reference dimensions are available for DIN sizes DN25 through DN100 and inch sizes 1″ through 4″. Available options include 304 or 316L stainless steel, several surface finishes, and elements within the published 10 to 400 mesh range. Element construction, connections, seals, and operating limits are matched to the application and finalized with the order.

How the Welded Straight Strainer Works

Fluid enters one end of the housing, passes through the cylindrical filter element, and leaves through the opposite connection. Particles larger than the selected opening remain on the element. As debris builds up, the pressure drop increases, signaling that the screen should be inspected and cleaned.

  • Inlet and outlet on the same centerline
  • Cleanable stainless steel housing
  • Removable metal filter element
  • Clamp-retained service cover in the illustrated configuration
  • Connections, element, seal, and finish selected for the application

If the piping layout calls for an angled service chamber, compare the welded Y-type strainer. An angle-type strainer is designed for a filtration point that also needs a 90-degree change in piping direction.

Pressure drop: size, flow rate, fluid density and viscosity, screen opening, open area, and solids loading all affect pressure drop. Because no standard pressure-drop curve is available for this product, sizing requires the actual process data.

Inside the Strainer

A clamp-retained end cover provides access to the cylindrical element without opening the pipeline connections. In the disassembled view, the element has a perforated wall and seats against a gasketed service end. Depending on the required retention, the perforated cylinder can provide coarse screening or support a finer filtering layer. Screen rating, seal material, finish, connections, and working limits are specified for the selected configuration.

Removable Stainless Steel Filter Element

The cylindrical element slides out through the clamped service end, giving operators direct access for inspection and cleaning. The illustrated element has a perforated wall; depending on the required opening, that wall can serve as the screen or support an additional mesh layer.

Element length, seating diameter, end geometry, and flow direction are matched to the housing. Other removable screen formats are available for different housing designs, including industrial filter strainer baskets.

  • 304 or 316L stainless steel, depending on element design
  • Opening or mesh rating specified with the screen construction
  • Perforated support and fine filtering layer defined separately
  • Seating and gasket surfaces accessible during maintenance
  • Damaged or distorted elements replaced rather than returned to service

Available Element Designs

Element design can be matched to the target particle size, solids loading, cleaning method, and allowable pressure drop. Millimeter openings and mesh counts describe different rating systems and should not be treated as interchangeable. Final dimensions and seating details are matched to the straight housing.

Perforated or Mesh Element

Reference openings are 0.5, 0.8, 1, 1.5, 2, and 3 mm, with 304 or 316L stainless steel listed as material options. A finer stainless steel filter mesh also needs a defined wire diameter and weave pattern.

Wedge Wire Element

316L wedge wire uses continuous slots to provide a rigid screening surface. The reference filtration range is 0.1-0.5 mm; slot direction, support geometry, and allowable differential pressure are selected for the application.

Woven Screen Element

Reference grades are 50, 100, 200, and 300 mesh in 304 or 316L stainless steel. The clear aperture depends on both mesh count and wire diameter.

Installation, Inspection, and Cleaning

Check flow direction and clearance

Install the housing in the specified orientation, with enough room to release the cover and pull out the full element.

Isolate and depressurize the line

Shut down the process, isolate both sides, drain the housing, and verify zero pressure before loosening the clamp.

Inspect the element and seal

Look for blocked openings, damaged mesh, cracked welds, distortion, worn seating surfaces, or chemical attack on the gasket.

Clean and reassemble

Choose a cleaning method that removes the residue without damaging the element, then replace worn parts before returning the line to service.

Safety: never release the clamp or attempt to remove the element while the housing is pressurized.

Where Welded Straight Strainers Are Used

These strainers fit straight pipe runs that need an accessible, cleanable metal screen ahead of sensitive equipment. Potential duties include food and beverage lines, dairy processing, pharmaceutical and fine-chemical service, edible-oil processing, and water treatment. Final selection depends on the fluid, retained solids, temperature, pressure, connections, and cleaning requirements.

Food Processing

Ingredient and Process-Liquid Screening

Remove unwanted solids from transfer lines using product-contact materials, seals, and finishes selected for the process.

Beverage

Beverage Process Lines

Protect downstream equipment with a screen opening selected around the product and expected solids load.

Dairy

Dairy Liquid Transfer

Provide accessible screening where routine removal and cleaning of the element are part of the operating plan.

Pharmaceutical

Specified Process Liquids

Configure the materials, finish, seals, connections, documentation, and cleaning method around the project requirements.

Water Treatment

Particulate Pre-Screening

Capture suspended debris before downstream equipment using an opening selected for the flow and expected solids load.

Edible Oil & Fine Chemicals

Compatible Liquid Service

Screen process liquids after checking viscosity, corrosion compatibility, particle characteristics, and cleaning method.

If the solids load would require frequent manual cleaning, an automatic self-cleaning filter may be a better fit for the process.

WHAT DOES “STRAIGHT” MEAN IN A WELDED STRAIGHT STRAINER?

It describes the piping geometry: the inlet and outlet are located on the same axis so the housing installs in a straight pipe run. It does not by itself define the end-connection standard or the internal screen opening.

HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM ANGLE-TYPE AND Y-TYPE STRAINERS?

A straight strainer keeps both process connections on one centerline. An angle-type strainer accommodates a 90-degree pipe turn, while a welded Y-type strainer places the screen chamber at an angle to the main flow path.

DOES 100 MESH DEFINE AN EXACT MICRON RATING?

No. Wire diameter and weave pattern also affect the clear opening. Select the mesh construction by the particle size the strainer needs to retain, not by mesh count alone.

HOW SHOULD PRESSURE DROP BE EVALUATED?

Clean and loaded pressure drop depend on flow rate, fluid density and viscosity, connection size, element geometry, open area, and retained solids. Because no standard pressure-drop curve is available for this product, the calculation needs the actual operating data.

CAN THE STAINLESS STEEL ELEMENT BE CLEANED AND REUSED?

It is designed as a cleanable metal element, but reuse is acceptable only when the mesh or perforations, support, welds, seating surfaces and gasket remain suitable for service.

WHICH DETAILS MUST BE CONFIRMED BEFORE ORDERING?

Confirm process fluid, flow rate, pressure, temperature, size, connection standard, material, screen opening, gasket, finish, flow direction, dimensions, service clearance and documentation requirements.
